The Upcoming Witcher 4

Big news, The Witcher 4 has officially been confirmed, and I know a lot of the Witcher community is really excited about another sequel, we certainly did expect this to happen at some point. There have been a vast number of rumors about another sequel of the Witcher by CD Projekt Red, and the team has mentioned on another one happening multiple times. With The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt being one of the greatest RPGs known, another sequel to the franchise would make sense, with confirmation that it is now in the works, we have collected information of what we could expect to happen in the next Witcher game, not only that but where the plot takes place and which characters might be included.

When Is The Witcher 4 Release Date?

When may you ask? We do not know yet. There hasn’t been news about a release date or hints so far, there probably won’t be for quite a while. During March 2022, CD Projekt Red announced ‘’at this point, no further details regarding the game, such as development time frame or release date are available’’, but there is a chance we might end up seeing a few teasers or other information that we could gain about The Witcher 4. As soon as we get gameplay videos unlike Cyberpunk 2077 as their first teaser of gameplay reveal was far before their eventual release date as a lot of fans anticipated it to come sooner than later.

The Witcher 4’s New Engine

It was unexpected news hearing that CDPR would be using Unreal Engine 5, knowing that they're previously using a new iteration of their REDengine. During the recent State of Unreal event, the members of the studio explained why this bizarre change was decided.

‘’There was one demo that last year, that was the medieval environment demo, where at one point there’s a notice board that looks strangely familiar to things we’ve done in the past, that has even a sign that says ‘monster slayer wanted’,“ Slama explains in the video. “And I’m like, ‘Hmm, are they trying to tell us, come over to Unreal Engine, look how great your games can look on there? Was that a whole demo made with that nefarious purpose? # I don’t know, but it caught my eye.’’

Is The Witcher 4 going to be a Epic Games Store Exclusive?

First and foremost, no, or at least CDPR state that ‘’not planning on making the game exclusive to one shopfront’’.

It seems quite peculiar for the team to confirm, but when the news first came about The Witcher 4, CDPR also stated that they would use Unreal Engine 5 like we mentioned. CDPR does also possess GOG shopfront, so it would be very odd if The Witcher 4 wasn’t accessible here. If that what you’re really asking is whether it’s going to be available on Steam, the CDPR team hasn’t given a clear answer yet.

Is there going to be a Lynx School of witchers in The Witcher 4?

As we know of now, the initial teaser for the next Witcher game is the biggest clue we can attempt to decipher. It seems to be a witcher medallion, representing the Wolf School of witcher that we see Geralt wear, but this one seems to be shaped of a lynx.

At first, we all seemed to be startled about the Lynx School theory but seeing this makes it much more legitimate than it was but what still boggles our brain is that it hasn’t appeared in any other Witcher game, television production or even novel. The only information that we know of the lynx school lore is unofficial, crafted by the Witcher fanbase.

Later on after the teaser image was revealed, CDPR’s community manager Marcin Momot answered to all the speculation about lynx medallion with an emphatic nod, confirming that he wasn’t joking around and stated this, ‘’ I can confirm that the medallion is, in fact, shaped after a lynx,’’ he said.

Will Ciri be included in The Witcher 4?

There’s most likely a chance that Ciri will be in the next witcher game. We all know in the ending, there is a path we can take with definite possibilities that allow Ciri to continue her story. In what’s preferred to be the best ending for the game, Ciri and Geralt hang out together on the witcher path after Geralt gives her a silver sword of her own.

In 2019 CDPR discusses adapting her character from the books, as part of her story didn’t really make it into The Witcher 3, they mentioned ‘’Maybe it’s something we’ll get to revisit in the future.’’

Before the release of The Witcher 3, CDPR has been open about the fact that Geralt wouldn’t return as the protagonist, whatever happens to come next in the series. ‘’With the third instalment, we should warp it up and conclude a lot of threads,’’ CDPR#s CEO Marcin Iwinski told Polygon back in 2013. ‘’We are not killing the world and walking away from it, but we will definitely want to make this game the finale in a big way.’’

It's most likely not going to be called The Witcher 4

For what’s to come of the next Witcher game, it probably won’t have a 4 on it. CDPR co-founder Marcin Iwinski has stated that the studio sees the first three games as a self-sustaining trilogy. ‘’The Witcher was designed as a trilogy and a trilogy cannot have a fourth part, can it?’’ he stated in a 2017 investor call.

The explanation might sound minor, but it’s more about giving the right expectations for what’s about to come next for the game. Not only will a theoretical next Witcher not start Geralt, but it might be non-identical in more groundwork ways than we’re expecting it to be. For all we know, it could take place in a different time, or continent. The game could take the next step and start to delve into different places like sorceresses or vampires.
